The game starts out with a very tongue in cheek narration and story but within an hour, I was surprised by the depth and fully realized world. S:S&S EP (the short name) is both art and a joy to play. It changed the way I view gaming, especially gaming on iOS. The story telling, the art, the characters, the controls, the music, the world is just so wonderfully crafted to fit together. It is a unique experience.
Jim Guthrie is the genius behind the soundtrack, it perfectly matches and complements the game world. Again, at the start its simple but further down the rabbit hole you realize your participating in a movie with this epic score that backs up the visuals and in the end overwhelms them. If puzzles confounded me or my goal was obscured The music was always there, changing and keeping me engaged in my surroundings. Re-listening to the tracks now, I immediately remember key plot points and locations from a game I played eight months ago. I don’t know why it has taken me this long to buy the soundtrack.
If you do check out the game be sure to have a listen to Jim Guthrie’s soundtrack called Sword & Sworcery LP - The Ballad of the Space Babies, the eccentric name will make sense if you play the game. It’s available, in a plethora of versions and also on iTunes.
If you venture into the game make sure to find Jim Guthrie chilling with his guitar, it’s a nice hat tip and he’ll play you my favourite song from the soundtrack.
