I saw Eggy for the first time last year in Cockeysville Maryland at The Hot August Music Festival. I was blown away and could not wait to get to another show. I was super impressed and started watching their videos and was just falling in love.
I work at a radio station in Baltimore, 89.7 WTMD. We are a public radio station music station. If you listen to The Current, KEXP, KUTX, WFUV or WXPN, you'd probably dig us too. I also am in charge of the playlist and scheduling each day. So I played the band here and there.
I have a bunch of industry connections and was singing Eggy's praises to anyone who'd listen. A long time friend informed me the band had recently joined their management roster late last year and asked if I'd like to have them out for a show.
Each summer we put on a concert series called First Thursday Festivals. They are free, have huge crowds, food trucks you know the whole bit. Past headliners have been Dan Deacon, Neal Francis, beabadoobee, Deer Tick, Parquet Courts and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong.
So I jumped at the chance to book them and we set it up for September because they were already playing the All Good Now fest in June.
It was a long wait but god damn did they deliver. They really had the crowd going for their two hour set. They even covered Man Smart, Woman Smarter with members of the Baltimore Ravens marching band. Eggy with horns!!! Right up my alley. That was a FTP for the band and they didn't even have a chance to practice with the Ravens crew. You would have never known that either of those were a fact. Total pros on both sides.
I'm on site all day and make sure all the bands arrive, get loaded on and are taken care of from a hospitality stand point. So before soundcheck I was about to get the band topped off on ice in their cooler and heard Jake and Dani practicing Man Smart. After a few minutes they started watching a video so I stepped in to their green room and they were reviewing tape like a football team and were watching a awesome version of Laurel. I told them that we played that and Moments Notice as singles basically all year long so our listeners would be familiar with them.
I also mentioned the importance that Little Feat has in the Baltimore area. They recorded Feats Don't Fail Me now here and set up shop in the area for a few years and started families here. Lowell George's daughter was born here during that time. Look up the story of this. It's very cool and the radio station WYPR did a great story about it and was created by reporter John Lee.
So during soundcheck they checked all the boxes and practiced the singles and Skin It Back. I was so pumped for the show and everyone who was going to be there.
Baltimore has a big and tight knit jam scene and everyone showed up and had a blast. Eggy are the real deal and just a group of lovely fellas.
Can't wait to see them again.
P.S. We always have a Baltimore band open the show. Uncle Kunkel's One Gram Band were the support and killed it. Check them out if you dig Zappa (Frank was from Baltimore) and Gizz among other influences.
